His Divine Grace
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
The Jaladuta Voyage to America
On the nineteenth of September 1965, a cargo steamship named Jaladuta sailed into New York Harbor and docked at a Brooklyn pier at Seventeenth Street. An elderly Vaishnava sannyasi dressed in a simple cotton dhoti, an old shawl, neck beads, having a golden complexion and shaven head, stepped onto the shores of the Western world. It was Srila Prabhupada.
He had just forty Indian rupees and boxes containing his English commentaries of the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Although he arrived with little material resources—“I did not know whether to turn left or right”—he came strictly on the sacred order of his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, to bring the holy names of Lord Chaitanya to the English-speaking world.
Thus began a spiritual revolution flooding the continents with the chanting of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. In world history, monumental changes take place because of rare individuals who truly live by their ideals. Srila Prabhupada was such a personality.
