Utpanna Ekadashi
– Tuesday 26 Nov, 2024
Lord Krishna explained the significance of Utpanna Ekadashi fasting to Arjuna, as mentioned in the Bhavishya Purana.
Arjuna asked, “Why is this Ekadashi considered the most sacred? Please tell me in detail.”
Lord Krishna replied, “In ancient times, during the golden age, there was a fierce demon named Mur who defeated all the demigods. Fearing him, the demigods sought help from Lord Shiva. Shiva directed them to Lord Vishnu for a solution.
The demigods prayed to Vishnu, describing Mur’s atrocities and their suffering. They explained that Mur had overthrown them and taken control of the heavens. Lord Vishnu listened and assured them of help.
Vishnu, accompanied by the demigods, went to fight Mur in his city of Chandravati. A fierce battle ensued for 100 years, but Mur’s strength made it difficult to defeat him. Exhausted, Lord Vishnu entered a cave named Hemavati to rest.
Seizing the opportunity, Mur followed Vishnu into the cave, planning to kill him. However, at that moment, a powerful and radiant woman emerged from Lord Vishnu’s body. This divine woman challenged and fought Mur. After an intense battle, she defeated him, severing his head and freeing the world from his tyranny.
When Lord Vishnu awoke, he was astonished to see Mur dead. The divine woman explained that she was born from his energy to protect him. Pleased, Lord Vishnu named her Utpanna and declared, “The day you appeared will be known as Utpanna Ekadashi. Whoever observes a fast on this day will be freed from all sins and ultimately attain salvation.”
Lord Krishna concluded, “O Arjuna, fasting on Utpanna Ekadashi is the most powerful and rewarding. On this sacred day, one should remember and worship Lord Krishna with devotion.
